We are delighted to announce the launch of the first quarterly JustGESI newsletter, offering a deep dive into the intersections of gender, inclusion, and just and equitable energy futures.
The newsletter is designed to be a valuable resource and a catalyst for conversation. It provides our community, including researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and the general public, with the latest project updates, core insights, and reflections from the JustGESI research initiative.
Funded by the UKRI Ayrton Challenge Programme and led by Professor Vanesa Castán Broto with an interdisciplinary and international team of researchers and practitioners, JustGESI aims to advance gender equality and social inclusion (GESI) and address the structural drivers of discrimination and inequalities in energy policies and practices.
Our inaugural JustGESI newsletter, published on November 20, 2025, is now available on Substack. It offers a comprehensive overview of our recent activities, including our research, partnerships, and policy engagement.
Highlights from the First Edition:
Cape Town Workshop Reflections: Detailed summaries from our first in-person project workshop in Cape Town, South Africa. The JustGESI team mapped the GESI energy policy landscape in Ethiopia, Malawi, Mozambique, and Tanzania, and discussed policy practice and data gaps, and reflected on what it takes to advance just, inclusive, and sustainable energy futures.
Official JustGESI Launch Celebration: News and highlights from the official launch of the JustGESI initiative at the University of Sheffield.
Engagement with Mission 300: A spotlight on the JustGESI team’s engagement with the regional energy initiative Mission 300, which is a joint effort by the World Bank and the African Development Bank aiming to ensure energy access for 300 million Africans by 2030.
Fieldwork Focus: A comprehensive blog post written by our colleague Dr Rihab Khalid detailing our insightful field visit to Langa Township and underscoring the importance of place-based approaches to just energy transitions.
