The JustGESI Malawi team participated in the 2025 Malawi National Energy Conference as part of ongoing efforts to mainstream Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) in the energy transition across Ethiopia, Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania. Under Work Package 2 of the JustGESI project, the team focuses on driving institutional change by examining structural and everyday practices that impeded the development and implementation of GESI-responsive energy policies.

The Malawi National Energy Conference, now in its fourth edition, is the country’s leading energy sector event. Convened by the Renewable Energy Industries Association of Malawi (REIAMA) in partnership with the Ministry of Energy and development partners, the conference provides a high-level platform for dialogue, knowledge exchange and partnership building among government, private sector, civil society, donors, and academia.

On 30 July 2025, the JustGESI Malawi team joined a virtual side-event at the conference titled ‘Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) in the Energy Sector: Policy and Action.’ The session highlighted gender disparities in energy access and employment, promoted inclusive energy policies to ensure no one is left behind, and explored the link between energy entrepreneurship and GESI.

During the event, the team delivered an introductory presentation on the JustGESI research programme, outlining its background and methodology. The session also provided an opportunity to share how JustGESI aims to contribute to more inclusive policy and practice within Malawi’s energy sector. Stakeholders were invited to provide feedback and suggestions, which will inform the next stages of the JustGESI study.
