Dr Guday Emirie and Dr Getachew Bekele of the JustGESI team participated in a policy dialogue roundtable on women’s advocacy priorities in Ethiopia’s informal energy sector, held in Addis Ababa. The event was convened by Ethiopian Women in Energy (EWiEn) in partnership with the Strategic Initiative for Women in the Horn of Africa (SIHA) Network. This article presents key insights and takeaways from the discussion.

JustGESI team members Solomon Teklemichael Bahta, Fana Filli Nurhusen, and Akatew Haile Mebrahtu from Mekelle University, Ethiopia, supported by Serena Saligari (Loughborough University), Mulualem Gebregiorgis (Sheffield Hallam University), and Yiheyis Eshetu (Ministry of Water and Energy, Ethiopia), present a report providing an overview of Ethiopia’s transition to modern cooking.

Dr Getachew Bekele, JustGESI team member and Associate Professor at Addis Ababa University, provides an overview of key energy sector events he attended in Ethiopia in February 2026, including the e‑cooking in humanitarian settings workshop, the Gender & Energy Technical Working Group (GE‑TWG) meeting, and the 78th Talk Energy Ahead (TEA) session.

In December 2024, Professor Vanesa Castán Broto, Principal Investigator (PI) of JustGESI and CESET, submitted evidence to a call from the International Development Committee in Parliament based on research and findings from the ESRC GCRF/UKRI-funded project CESET (Community Energy and Sustainable Energy Transitions in Ethiopia, Malawi and Mozambique). 

Dr Getachew Bekele, Co-Investigator for the JustGESI project and Associate Professor at Addis Ababa University, shared insights on integrating GESI into clean cooking policies during a high-level dialogue organised by SNV and GE-TWG in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
